Makhanda mother ‘feels let down by justice system’
A woman in Makhanda, in the Eastern Cape, whose daughter accused her uncle of trying to rape her has expressed dissapointment over the alleged assailant’s release on bail.
The woman says she feels let down by the justice system.
Her daughter says her uncle tried to force himself on her on Sunday morning.
The victim alleges that he had kicked down the door, slapped her and ripped her clothes off.
She says she then wrestled as she fought to keep her undergarments on, whilst her the man stripped naked and forced himself on her.
She managed to escape and ran to the neighbours, who alerted the community.
The man was arrested after the community informed the police.
He appeared in the Makhanda High Court yesterday for a bail application.
Residents were protesting outside court, demanding justice for the little girl and that the suspect remain behind bars.
They signed a petition, which had a long list of alleged rapists, who they said were still roaming free around the town.
The victim was also in court.
Her uncle was released on bail, nonetheless, and a date for his trial is yet to be set. – Report by Nande Siko from Rhodes Music Radio.
